Update from Alfonso – 4/9

I enjoyed very much working with Robert Woods last week and helping him to get to know the school. I especially enjoyed the presentations he did at grade 1-2 and grade 3-5 assemblies. Students were struck not only by the amazing close up photos of African wildlife that Robert and his wife Amelia have taken in Tanzania, but also by the view of Mount Kilimanjaro which they enjoy from their kitchen window.

Seems like a spring for teacher honors. Following on the announcement of Julie’s winning a Fulbright fellowship, I learned Friday afternoon that grade 5 Chinese teacher Hong Shentu has been selected from among more than 1000 candidates by the National Council of Teachers in Mathematics (NCTM) and the National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) to attend the 2012 Mickelson ExxonMobil Teachers Academy at the Liberty Science Center. Hong will join 200 third-through fifth-grade teachers from across the nation in Jersey City, NJ on July 22 for this one week-intensive, all-expense paid professional development opportunity. Congratulations Hong on a well deserved honor.

Upon return from Mexico, Constanza’s class got to work on their exhibition projects but are also working on puppets for a presentation about famous explorers. I ran into Henry Hudson and Juan Ponce De Leon floating through the halls the other day and you can see them pictured here. Great artistry, ladies!

Following on Kevin’s previous email, please avoid sugary foods for breakfast, and it would be wise to avoid artificial colors was well! I think it is fairly well documented that these things make children inordinately bouncy and squirmy!
