What Makes International School of Portland Different
Finding the right language-immersion school for your family in Portland can be challenging. We believe ISP stands apart thanks to our inquiry-based learning environment that exposes students to multiple cultures and inspires them to become global citizens. We are also proud to implement the International Baccalaureate program, recognized globally for its academic rigor and holistic approach to education.
ISP is actually a cultural immersion program focused on creating global citizens
Our language immersion programming goes beyond just learning a language; it involves fully engaging with the traditions, customs, values, and societal norms of the cultures associated with the language being learned. The goal is to provide students with a more profound and nuanced understanding of the cultures where the language is spoken.
Our teachers are native speakers
Our teachers are of course the most important part of ISP’s full immersion. All are native speakers of our immersion languages, and have bachelor’s degrees and many years of experience in early childhood education. They bring a passion and love for teaching, and a lived cultural experience that is woven into their curriculum.

ISP offers a full immersion program
ISP students spend at least 80% of their day immersed in their target language, compared with 50% or less at most other immersion programs. As a result, our students achieve a higher level of fluency upon leaving 5th grade.
Here’s how ISP’s full immersion program compares to other language programs:
ISP’s International Baccalaureate program fosters inquiry-based learning, and differs from Waldorf and Montessori
IB curriculum is recognized worldwide for prioritizing the understanding and appreciation of other cultures, enhancing students’ path to global citizenship. Its rigorous academic program cultivates critical and independent thinking, as well as cognitive flexibility and self-driven learning. Research indicates that IB students often excel in foreign language acquisition compared to non-IB students, including metalinguistic awareness.
IB’s Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) component ensures the development of well-rounded individuals through participation in creative pursuits, physical activities, and community service.

ISP’s unique 5th Grade Capstone Study Abroad Program allows students to apply their education in the real-world
Our amazing Capstone Program is the ultimate conclusion to an ISP education, enabling students to validate their language proficiency and cultural understanding through real world experience. It’s not just a study-abroad trip; it’s the culmination of ISP’s unique approach of language immersion, cultural immersion, and IB curriculum put into action for students in their last year at the school. At the same time, the program helps 5th graders cultivate their growing confidence and independence as they prepare for middle school.
