Hispanic Heritage Month – Join us for Spanish Track Language & Culture Day!

ISP is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from September 15th through October 15th. Dating back to 1968, Hispanic Heritage Month honors contributions by people of Hispanic identity. At ISP, we’re excited to celebrate the diverse cultures and countries within our Spanish Track and school community at large!

This Friday, September 20th, ISP will be hosting a special Spanish Track Language and Culture Day! The event will be split held both during the school day AND after school, so that as many ISP community members can enjoy it.

The after school portion will involve music, games, snacks, and other activities. Please come by between 3-4pm to enjoy and celebrate!

We would love to have some more parent volunteers help support the after school portion of the event! Below is the link for more information about the volunteer opportunities and to sign up.

Japanese Middle Schoolers Visit ISP!

Middle School students from the city of Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture, will be on campus from next Monday through Wednesday! As many of you know, we have developed an amazingly strong and close relationship with our friends in Hachinohe. Last Fall, our 4th and 5th Graders spent one week in Hachinohe and spent four nights living with incredibly gracious families. We returned the favor by hosting 13 middle school students this past spring.

These recent trips are part of an ongoing bond between International School of Portland and the children of Hachinohe. In 2013, two kasagi (top beams) from two sacred Japanese Shinto gates, or torii, washed up on the Oregon Coast after the 2011 Japanese Earthquake and tsunami. As part of the effort to restore and return the kasagi, 1000 paper cranes were folded by children from International School of Portland and other Portland schools. They continued to send messages and letters to each other and prior to Covid, our Japanese track began their 5th Grade Capstone trips to Hachinohe. Last year, our in-person visits were revived!

If you see the group around don’t be shy – say hello and introduce yourself!

Thanks to all of our wonderful ISP families who are hosting students!
