The Owl 9/5/2024

Our Annual Founders’ Day is this Friday!

Our Annual Founders’ Day is this Friday! Founders’ Day is a beautiful ISP tradition that we hold every September. This year we are celebrating with TWO Events! Our annual Handshaking Ceremony will be in the morning, and we will host our special Founders’ Day celebration in the last afternoon.

HANDSHAKING CEREMONY

Part of Founders’ Day is the Handshaking Ceremony, where all teachers/staff members line up like a receiving line in the playground and shake hands with every student. ISP founders Doug and Frey Stearns will be joining us for the Handshaking Ceremony as we begin our 35th year of operation.

Parent participation is NOT required, though it is a sweet event if you can come by to watch. Please have your child wear his/her ISP t shirt!

WHAT: Handshaking Ceremony
WHEN: Friday, September 6 from 8:30-9:00
WHERE: Lower Playground

Volunteers Needed: We do need a few parent volunteers for each class – please let your teacher know if you can help.

MySchool App: Directory, Privacy Settings, and Class Rosters

MySchool App has digital Directories! You can search for other community members in the database and view their “Contact Card ‘ information. Parents have Parent, Student, and Faculty & Staff Directories. Log into MySchool App here: https://intlschool.myschoolapp.com/ and click on “Directories.”

(NOTE: You can see more information about your own family members on their Contact Cards than other parents can see, such as your child’s emergency contacts and school-assigned email address).

“MY CONTACTS”
The My Contacts feature allows you to save a list of the people that you contact most frequently, thereby creating a personal address book. For example, you can add your child’s teachers to your My Contacts page.

PRIVACY SETTINGS
You have your own Privacy Settings page, which can be accessed by navigating to your name in the upper right corner and selecting Settings > Privacy.

On this page, in the General Settings section, a user can determine what information that teachers, parents, and admins can view about you. By default, information that parents can see about other students and teachers is quite limited.

In the Directory Settings section, a user can determine what information others can view about them in the school Directories. A user has two options:

Include my name but do not include any other information about me
– If you choose this option, only your name will appear in the community directories. ***Please keep in mind that it will be very difficult for other parents to invite you and your child to playdates, birthday parties, and other events if no contact information is shown!***
Include my name and use my General Settings for what other people should see about me
– If you choose this option, the community directories will display the information that you published in the General Settings section

**IMPORTANT**: Please DO NOT delete your address/contact information entirely from the system! School administrators needs this information. Instead, please use the information above to edit your privacy settings.

CLASS ROSTERS
The best way to see who is in your child’s class – and to get parent contact information – is through class rosters.

If you haven’t found them yet, here is how you can:

  • Click on your child’s name in the upper left corner of the screen, then scroll down the page to their list of courses.
  • Click on the course name – then click Roster. TIP: Pick a class that has “Morning Meeting” in it to see your child’s homeroom.
  • You’ll be able to see all the children in the class
  • You can find contact information for your child’s classmate(s) by clicking on the three dots below each child’s square and “View Profile.”

Curriculum Night is Coming Up!

All parents are encouraged to attend ISP Curriculum Night, when teachers meet with parents as a group to share information about our academic program, homework and expectations for the year. Meet and speak with your student(s)’ Homeroom and English teachers! Art, Music, and PE Specialists will also be sending out more information.

WHAT: ISP Curriculum Night
WHEN: Wednesday, September 25, 5-7pm (precise session schedule will be sent out soon)

This year will be virtual. Homeroom and English teachers will host their session in their individual “Zoom Rooms.” Zoom links to be sent soon!

ISP and Portland State University’s “Better Block PSU”

ISP is participating in Portland State University’s “Better Block PSU” program! To provide more transportation options and give the students more access to the school’s surrounding neighborhood, Portland State University students are working to improve walking and biking access to the campus. The Better Block PSU https://trec.pdx.edu/better-block-psu project will focus on that less-than-lovely intersection of South Sheridan Street and Water, below the 405 overpass.

The PSU Transportation Research and Education Center has published an article here.

From the article: “By the time the project crosses the finish line, the goal is to have a complete engineering plan for viable and affordable biking and walking facilities. Having an existing plan should make it much easier for the school to work with the city to implement the changes.”

We are very excited to have this opportunity to improve this block!
