ISP Japanese Capstone Study Abroad Trip

Our Japanese Track 4th and 5th graders are off on their Capstone Study Abroad trip, and are having a wonderful time! They began attending school while doing homestay in Hachinohe, Aomori Prefecture. This is the first time ISP students have been able to do homestay since 2019, and it’s exciting to reintroduce this part of the Capstone experience!

In school, the students immediately began participating in classes and making connections with their new peers. The ISP group also visited the Mayor’s office, where local officials were highly impressed not only with the students’ level of fluency, but their familiarity with customs and culture. Stay tuned for more updates from Japan in the coming weeks!

PS. The Spanish and Chinese track Capstone trips are in March!

Reminder: IB PYP Parent Survey

Every 5 years, International Baccalaureate schools are required to engage in a rigorous Self-Study, which ensures that they continue to meet the highest standards of academic excellence.

The IB Self-Study involves a comprehensive internal review of our school’s adherence to the IB program’s standards and practices.

A key part of the IB Self-Study process is gathering parent feedback about your child’s learning experience here at ISP. We kindly ask you to complete a brief survey about the IB PYP program.

IB PYP PARENT SURVEY

Thank you in advance for your participation, and we look forward to working together to continue providing an exceptional IB education for our students.

November Learner Profile Trait: Communicator

The ten International Baccalaureate Learner Profile traits are school values, and are means by which to support healthy social and emotional development. Our faculty focuses upon one of them each month as means.

For November, faculty are focusing on “Communicator”

Profile Overview: We express ourselves confidently and creatively in more than one language and in many ways. We collaborate effectively, listening carefully to the perspectives of other individuals and groups.

In other words…  “We share our ideas and feelings, we listen actively, and we consider other perspectives.”
Our librarians, Amy and Tomoyo, have recommended books about Communication.

ISP Student Support Team: Speech and Language Support information

Some parents have recently asked about their child’s speech, and wondered about getting them assessed for speech and language therapy services.

Families wanting information about speech and language therapy:
If you are wondering if your child might have speech and language struggles, there are three ways to get more information. One is to ask your pediatrician for a referral for assessment. One thing to know is that here at ISP we have students who access speech and language therapy online while at school, through OHSU speech and language services. You would have to specify with your child’s pediatrician to be referred to OHSU (supposedly they take most if not all insurances). Once referred, please inform Erin, Head of Student Support, who will be the one to coordinate your child getting services online during school time.

Another avenue is to go through your neighborhood public school and let them know you would like your child assessed by their speech and language pathologist. They would then contact me directly to set up an intake meeting. This process can take a long time (esp. for those within PPS due to the current strike), and if your child qualifies, they would be seen for services in person at the school, not at ISP, so that would be up to the parents to transport the child there.

Lastly, you can contact the myriad of private speech and language clinics to get assessed and access services. You would need to ask them directly whether your insurance would cover it.
