It’s Teacher Appreciation Week!
WE LOVE OUR TEACHERS!
Our teachers started the week being welcomed to campus with a large yard sign, then enjoyed fresh juice smoothies from ISP admin staff on Monday afternoon!
On Tuesday, they were delighted by student created cards. Thanks to all of you who brought them in for the teachers!
Here’s what is in store for the rest of the week (yes, teachers, you can know now!):
Wednesday: Treats from parents for teachers in breakrooms
Thursday: Gift bags for homeroom teachers and specialists
Friday: Wear your homeroom teacher’s favorite color day! Teachers will also be served special treats, courtesy of Olia Poke and Tea, and each will be receiving a bottle of wine!
Special thanks to Room Parents, the Parent Network, and Teacher Appreciation Week Coordinator Erica Swanson Dufour – and to the generosity of our students and parents – for helping to put the week together!
It’s Walk & Roll to School Month – Bike Parade is Wednesday!
May is Walk + Roll Challenge Month! Download a scorecard and fill out the number of trips you make from May 1-31. If you also walk or bike home after school, please indicate that on your scorecard. You get double points for doing the round-trip.
At the end of the month, we’ll be handing out prizes! Everyone who participates gets swag, with a prize pack to the winner! The families of the 1st place winner and runner up will each get a bottle of wine. May 2nd will be the first day to start recording.
BIKE PARADE IS TOMORROW! Wednesday, May 4th is National Bike to School Day! We’ll meet up at the Salmon Street Springs fountain area to form a massive, unstoppable bike brigade parade to school.
Please get there between 7:35 and 7:40. If you are coming from the Southeast, it will be easier to come across the Hawthorne bridge that day rather than the Tillicum.
Go Owls! We look forward to seeing you on your bike or on your feet!
Kodomo No Hi – Japanese Children’s Day
Thursday, May 5 is Kodomo no hi (Children’s Day ) a Japanese national holiday that celebrates the well-being and happiness of children. Hallmarks of this tradition include flying cloth carp streamers (koinobori) and displaying items in homes like samurai helmets (kabuto) and armor that represent strength and bravery.
Please join us on campus after school for some fun activities! Our Japanese teachers and their students are really excited to share this special event with you! Kids should be picked up by 3:30 pm from classrooms or carline, unless they are in Global Kids, who will also be participating. You can park and walk up to campus; however, please do not park on South Caruthers so that our EC families can park and pick up their children.
SCHEDULE OF EVENTS
3:15-3:40 Activities – Learn about Taiko, help contribute to a collaborative koinobori (carp streamer), fold some origami cranes in support of Oregon Rises Above Hate, make some paper plate koinobori (carp) and enjoy some yummy treats from Japan.
3:40-4:00 Performance by Takohachi – Takohachi is a multifaceted nonprofit organization established in 2007 striving to educate and entertain through Japanese music. In 2018 Takohachi added a new group titled Takohachi’s Q-Ensemble which comprises a smaller unit of 3-5 dedicated and talented performers. The ensemble has had significant successes in smaller venues such as school and library systems with our edutainment programs, introducing Japanese culture through music. Q-Ensemble’s repertoires are unique and diverse from traditional to modern, using taiko drums, shinobue bamboo flute, tsugaru shamisen, and more.
4:00-4:30 Continuation of Activities Above
We hope to see you there!
Moving for Music and Art: Thank You!!
