5th Grade Exhibition is this Week!

All families are welcome to learn more about The Capstone Study Abroad program. This serves as the ultimate capstone to a ISP education, enabling students to validate their language proficiency and cultural understanding through real world experience. Your child will embark on this at the end of their 5th grade year here at ISP.

Following the Capstone info session, we will walk over to check out 5th Grade Exhibition! Exhibition is a special unit of the IB PYP, designed and executed by the students themselves! Exhibition is truly unique to ISP because we connect it to the 5th grade Capstone trips. Our students will present the findings of their research projects conducted this trimester and during their time on Capstone, and discuss their overall experience abroad. The daytime presentations will mostly be in the target language; feel free to ask questions in English!

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 24TH:

  • Capstone Study Abroad Info Session: 8:15-9:15 am, Arthur Administration Building

  • 5th Grade Exhibition: 9am-12pm; 1pm-3pm.  Learners’ Hall. These presentations will be in the target language for most of the day.

THURSDAY, APRIL 25TH:

  • 5th Grade Exhibition – Evening Session:  New this year! This special evening session will mostly be conducted in English. 6 – 7:30pm, Learners’ Hall.

Education Town Hall – April 30

As we approach the end of the school year, the Educational Leadership Team (ELT) would like to invite you to our Spring Education Town Hall meeting. Held twice a year, our Town Halls allow parents to pose questions or comments about any part of the academic program or general operations of International School of Portland. They offer a way to expand interaction between the ELT and the parent community, as well as to help build and promote clear communication.

We are trying something new this time around. Due to parent feedback, this Town Hall will be virtual! You’ll be able to attend the meeting from your own home, office, or desert island, provided you have internet access. Please join us on the evening of Tuesday, April 30 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm. To RSVP for the Town Hall, please click here.

In an effort to identify the most pressing questions you might have, please complete this survey in advance of the meeting. We will prioritize the responses in order to help focus the discussions at the meeting.

We hope that you can join us on April 30th.

ISP Alums Sweep Japanese Speech Contest!

For the second year in a row, ISP Japanese track alumni students won 1st, 2nd & 3rd palaces in Division 2 (immersion) at the Annual Japanese Speech Contest! Held last week, winners of the 30th Annual contest were:

1st place – Kate Andrews (class of 2017)

2nd place – Ayush Wynkoop (class of 2017)

3rd place – Ellie Adamczak (class of 2018)

This contest, organized by the Consular Office of Japan, is for students who are studying Japanese in middle and high schools (division 1), and Immersion program students of middle and high schools (division 2) in Oregon. The Consul General was there to see the ISP sweep too!

Special thanks to ISP parent and former teacher Yukako Owen sensei, who has continued to tutor these alumni because their chosen middle schools do not offer Japanese.  Congratulations, Kate, Ayush, and Ellie!

Class of 2019 Gift to International School of Portland

Thanks to families of International School of Portland Class of 2019, we now have a Sensory Path in Stearns Hall!  A sensory path promotes a series of movements that give children input to refocus, which can ultimately increase cognition and retention of new information.  This sensory path was funded in its entirety by the families from the graduating Class of 2019. Many little feet (and not just a few big ones) have already been side-stepping, hopping and smiling down the main hall.  Please stop by anytime and take a look (or a hop)!

Moving for Music and Art – THANK YOU!

Our annual jog-a-thon is now complete and we are thrilled to report that our ISP students completed over 11,800 laps for Moving for Music and Art!  That is a LOT of running in support of our art and music programs.  Thank you to our students, event volunteers, parents, cheerleaders and ISP staff for helping to make such a wonderful event.

Some reminders:

  • Please make checks payable to International School of Portland and note MMA on the memo line.  Please do not consolidate checks to allow for accurate gift receipting.

  • Any sponsors who pledged online will have their cards charged the week of April 22.  We will calculate the amount owed.

  • The deadline for returning the pledge sheets and collected cash and check donations to the school is Wednesday, May 1.  Forms can be dropped off with any teacher or the front desks of Stearns or Hilltop.

We would like to extend a huge THANK YOU to Holly Levow, Run for the Arts Chair 2013-2018 and Moving for Music and Art Chair 2018-2019.  Holly has been an integral part of the arts run at ISP for many years and we appreciate her leadership, enthusiasm and energy. With Holly, her husband Zach and our numerous volunteers, we couldn’t have done it!
