As a reminder, there is NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS this Friday, October 18th due to Parent Teacher Conferences. There are no 3rd-Party after school classes on Tuesday, October 22 due to afternoon conferences.

October Learner Profile Trait: Open-Minded
The ten International Baccalaureate Learner Profile traits are school values, and are means by which to support healthy social and emotional development. Our faculty focuses upon one of them each month as means. We will be sharing a description of each trait with families in The Owl, as well as tips for how to model and support these traits at home.
For October, faculty has been focusing on Open-Minded
Descriptor: They understand and appreciate their own cultures and personal histories, and are open to the perspectives, values and traditions of other individuals and communities. They are accustomed to seeking and evaluating a range of points of view, and are willing to grow from the experience. IB students have a deep understanding of various cultures and views, bringing an appreciation of new views to both their academic study and their involvement in local and wider communities. Their international mindedness complements the missions of the best tertiary institutions.

Great Oregon Shakeout – October 17
On October 17 at 10:17am, we will be participating in the 2019 Great Oregon ShakeOut. We will practice how to Drop, Cover, and Hold On to help us to be prepared to survive and recover quickly from big earthquake. Your family or organization can participate as well. A Note from Maria Abad, Head of Early Childhood
One of the most critical Fall activities in our Preschool and Kindergarten classrooms is relationship-building. Our Teachers and Assistants are spending time getting to know each of the students in their classrooms, just as they get to know each other better. While this is not new for our faculty, we understand that transitions are still new for our young students, and are a part of each child’s learning. Each student will have their very own way of dealing with the different emotions that they experience.
For us educators, transitions are also a gradual learning process. Carefully planned interactions are considered, as we get to know about our student’s likes, dislikes, personal interests, and various learning styles. Teachers observe and learn how our students interact with each other individually and within a group setting. They want to understand how to support each interaction as needed.
Play has a significant part in building relationships, as it does through our entire program. Our learning environments are carefully set up to encourage playful interactions. The students start to make their own choices and to make connections before they explore new ideas. They begin to build their community, and develop a sense of belonging.
It is through these playful interactions that our students learn and develop essential cognitive, social-emotional, and communication skills. Play allows students to feel safe and confident to try new things. It is through play that our students engage, learn, and interact with the world around them.
We love learning about your children, and discovering their strengths, challenges, and how they approach each situation. It is truly a joy. If you have any questions or comments about your child’s transition and their relationship-building, please do let us know!

Education Town Hall Survey
In preparation for the virtual Education Town Hall for parents (Tuesday, October 29th from 6:00p to 7:30pm), we invite you to complete a quick 4-question survey that will allow you to let our Educational Leadership Team (ELT) know what you want to talk about!! We will then sort and group your questions to identify priorities and allow the ELT to respond most effectively and efficiently during the meeting.
Celebrate Día de Los Muertos at TIS!
Día de los Muertos is a holiday celebrated in different ways by citizens of several Latin American countries. It is a time to joyfully remember friends and family members who have died and celebrate their memory. The traditions most well-known to Americans are unique to Mexico, where they originated thousands of years ago. Join us in celebrating this beautiful holiday!

Stop by the entrance to Learner’s Hall next week to see the beautiful and vibrant ofrenda set up by several of our Spanish track teachers. View artwork and writing created by TIS students. Contribute to the exhibit by adding a name or copy of a photo of one of your ancestors or family members who has died to our ofrenda.
Pan de Muerto, Atole, and Champurrado
For an authentic Mexican treat, visit the exhibit on Friday, November 1, from 3:00-4:30pm to sample pan de muerto and some delicious traditional corn-based drinks.
TIS Family Bingo Night – Nov 8
Date: Friday, November 8th
This event is open to all PreK to 5th grade students and parents. There will be multiple games of Bingo, prizes and delicious catered food. If you are planning to eat with us, we are asking for $5 per child, $10 per adult, with a $25 max per family for the catered food.

Picture Retake Day. If your child was absent on picture day, please contact Candy Trujillo at email@example.com so that your child’s name will be placed on the retake list. This is so that all kids will have their picture with their class in the composite.

Keepin’ it Clean Campus Walk – 4th and 5th Grades (afternoon session). Join fellow TIS parents as we walk the perimeter of the school picking up trash, removing graffiti, cutting back invasive plants. Trash bags, pickers, gloves, graffiti removal supplies provided. Optional, Adults only. Meet at 2:00pm near the front gates at the Hilltop Building. Be sure to record your volunteer hours! 2pm – 3pm

Visit Northwest Academy
Northwest Academy is a progressive independent middle and high school college preparatory program that inspires students to learn and achieve through our unique academic and arts partnership.
We offer courses in Spanish, French, and Mandarin. The Fluent Level is designed for students who come from language immersion programs and have attained near-native fluency in the target language.
Tours are held most Tuesday mornings from 10:30-11:45, and include a presentation by senior staff and student ambassadors, plus a tour of classes in session. These sessions are primarily geared toward parents; students are welcome to attend, but the Student Shadow Day is your student’s best introduction to the school.
