OAKS Scores: What Do They Mean?
If you had a child in 3rd – 5th grade last year, you should have recently received a letter that contains your child’s individual OAKS score. The Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills tests, also known as OAKS, are state standardized exams that measure the progress of students in elementary, middle, and high schools. The OAKS helps to determine how students are performing in regards to Oregon state standards, which define what they should learn each year.
ISP does not use these OAKS scores for purposes of assessing any individual student or teacher. However, these scores are somewhat valuable as a means by which to compare overall ISP student performance with other schools in the Portland Public School district and in the state.
Overall, the percentages of ISP students that meet or exceed these standards are significantly higher than those of area public schools and the state of Oregon. Below are percentages taken from the most recent year that the data is available:
