Next week, students in grades three, four, and five will be taking the Oregon Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (OAKS) in reading and mathematics. Fifth grade students will also test in science.
The OAKS is an online assessment. Click here for an Oregon Department of Education website where your child can practice the assessments.
The opportunity to practice the test can benefit your child by helping him/her to become comfortable with the OAKS interface. Students in third and fourth grades had the opportunity to practice the assessments several weeks ago. Fifth grade students have been encouraged to practice in their homeroom classes and/or at home.
If you would prefer for your child not to participate in the state testing this year, please notify me in writing that your child will be opting out of the testing. Homeroom teachers should be sharing in their weekly newsletters on which day and at which time their classes will be testing. Initial testing will occur next week, April 28th through May 2nd, and second attempt tests will be offered the following week. Students who pass the test on their first attempt will not be re-tested. TIS does not disclose preliminary test scores to parents. Official test scores will be released by the state in June and will be mailed directly to your home.
If you have specific questions about the OAKS this year, please feel free to contact me.
