"In the Know" Weekly Newsletter - The International School

When can a child return to school after being ill?

There has been some confusion about this. Our requirement comes from the county health department (to whom we report any significant outbreaks of disease):
"Following an illness, students will be readmitted when they no longer have any symptoms or experience discomfort, or their health care provider determines they are no longer contagious to others."

Please note that  students who have been taking antibiotics for more than 24 hours can be readmitted at the beginning of the school day following the 24 hour mark. NOT in the middle of the day.

Not only does it endanger the health of other students and their teacher to have a sick student attend school, but that student is most likely not able to participate comfortably in classroom activities and will not be able to effectively learn.

Please be sure that you have a "child is sick plan" in place. If your child is not well, please keep him/her home. If we contact you about your child who has become ill at school and needs to go home, please pick him/her up promptly. Please see page 14 of the parent handbook for more information on how sick is too sick for school.
