News from Alfonso - last ITK of the school year - 6/13/2011!

Greetings Friends,
So here we are: low k promotion ceremony and K graduation, and then fifth graders take the big walk on Thursday evening. And thus concludes year number twenty in the wondrous life of our little school.

First off I have to apologize for what may have seemed a rather imperious decree about the staggered times next year. I had forgotten to include it in the ITK article I sent to Linda and I asked her to add it. But I neglected to put in the appropriately “let me know if you have any questions or feedback “ clause. The fact is we had only 4 emails stating that this was a not great idea. We had canvassed a number of parents on this topic and thought through as many of the ramifications as we could. Unfortunately one never makes everyone happy though one would surely prefer to do that and to be universally loved. Like anything else we will try it and see.

Lost and found items: TAKE THEM BACK PLEASE. PLEASE.

We want to wish the best of luck to those who will be graduating or moving on to other schools next year. We hope your stay among us has enriched your life as well as improving your ability to communicate, to collaborate and to think. Special congratulations go to parent Anna Griffin, columnist for the Oregonian, who has been awarded a prestigious Niemen fellowship to study at Harvard. She is one of only 24 journalists to receive the honor. Anna’s mom gave me permission to congratulate her in this article. I also want to recognize Ms Mei Zhang, who will retire from her duties as Chinese Teaching Assistant. Fortunately Mei will still stay on to lead our Chinese dance troupe. Mei is an incredibly caring and steadfast educator who has contributed a great deal to TIS for the last 8 years.

I want to thank the administration and teachers and the entire staff for another great year of work and to thank all of you, parents and students for bringing so much life and beauty to TIS.

Someone else just asked if I was moving back to China this summer. I am just going on vacation to China this summer and will not be departing until NEXT JULY, 2012. So we have another year together to look forward to, and I am excited to continue our growth as a school and a community.

I will write to you over the summer and try to give you some more thoughtful passages to contemplate for summer reading. I will look for you down at the corner this week, but if I do not see you, have a peaceful restorative summer.
