Stephan's update

Welcome back, everyone, and happy New Year. Following the stormy weather of the last week of school, everyone is ready now to re-engage with the many activities of the first week back. It is already a very busy time.

Winter Festival
As mentioned prior to the holidays, of course, the Winter Festival had been rescheduled to this week, Thursday, January 8th. Grades pre-K, low-K, and K have their performances beginning at 10am in the Reed College Auditorium. Students in 1st to 5th grades stage their production at 6:30pm, again in the Reed College Auditorium. Everyone looks forward to these performances. They will now be the celebratory way in which to begin the second term of school.

Corbett playground update
We now have wonderful news, finally, regarding the Corbett deck. The school successfully appealed the previous decision regarding the deck. T.I.S. has been delayed for months in attempting to get this project underway. Preliminary construction had begun but the crew could go no further until issues with the City had been worked through. Frank Bojanowski anticipates having the permit in hand early this week. The construction crew remains on stand-by. They will commence work as soon as possible. Again, we thank everyone for their patience with this most trying of processes.

Gym flooring
The installation of the new gym floor was planned to take place over the Break. Weather issues made that impossible. While the floor is being installed, of course, the gym will remain inaccessible to students and staff. In trying to find a solution to this, Frank remains hopeful that the project may be able to commence ahead of March Break. Details will follow when we know more.

Playground tent
The tent sustained severe damage as a result of the storms. The tent has been taken to the company doing the repairs for assessment. The tent will either need extensive repair work or replacement. In the meantime, Frank is attempting to find another tent for loan or rent so that classes can carry on in that area.

Main building
Weather delayed the construction work on the stairwells and ground floor. The crew was able to enter the building over a week later than planned and has done extraordinary work in getting the building ready. Students, parents, and staff can use the normal entrance doors as before. There will be evidence of construction work still taking place, of course.

Please note: the Fire Marshal has directed the school to conduct daily fire drills from the Main building until the final inspection has taken place. While we hope to have that inspection completed as soon as the work is completed, in the meantime we must comply with the Marshal’s order.

Today was the first exit drill. Students and staff in the Main building will continue with these drills each day until further notice, i.e. the final inspection has been approved.

Strategic planning
The Strategic Planning Committee has continued to work diligently over the Break. This week, meetings will continue and there will be focus groups forming to provide input. Look for the notice in this edition of In The Know to find out how you can sign up to participate in one of these focus groups. Parent input is extremely important in this strategic planning process.

I wish for everyone an enjoyable and productive term two.
