PTO meetings & introductions

Welcome back, TIS families. I hope everyone had a wonderful summer and is ready to return to school. It was a summer of transition for TIS, but I feel that the school is making remarkable progress at moving forward and I am looking forward to a productive year.

Welcome to In the Know (ITK), a critical source of information on all happenings at the school. I highly recommend that you take the time to read it each week - it is the most accurate and comprehensive source of information in the school. The week’s ITK articles will be available every Monday by noon. The PTO will also post information on the community boards found in the main building near the gym, Stearns Hall, and the Corbett building.

I would like to extend an invitation to all parents to attend the 1st PTO meeting on Wednesday, September 10th, at 6:30 in the gymnasium. This will be an opportunity to hear from Dr. Stephen Grasmuck, our new interim Head of School and well as receive updates on the construction plan and recent board activities.

The PTO will also be hosting two Back to School Coffees next week. On Monday at the new Corbett facility and on Tuesday at the Sherman Street campus. Please stop by for a beverage, ask questions and/or provide feedback to the new PTO officers.

I would like to introduce the PTO line-up for the 2008/09 year. I am this year’s PTO president. My role is to facilitate communication between parents, teachers and the administrative staff, as well as to function as a liaison between these groups and the Board of Trustees. I have a son in the 2nd grade Chinese track and a daughter in the 5th grade Spanish track making this my eighth year at The International School. We have a lot of new talent within the Parent Teacher Organization this year:

  • Kathy Guilfoyle, vice president, has a daughter in the low-K Spanish track and her role includes assisting the president as well as overseeing all of the class room parents. (

  • We have two liaisons for new parents; Debbie Richman and Kimmy Simon. Debbie is the parent of a daughter in the 2nd grade Spanish track and Kimmy has a daughter in the low-K Chinese track. Their responsibilities consist of new parent guidance/correspondence as well as hosting various events throughout the school season to ease the new families transition to TIS. ( and

  • Peter Maxwell, who has a son in the 1st grade Spanish track, is our new treasurer and is responsible for oversight of the PTO budget. (

  • Last, but not least, is Debbie Rink, our returning PTO secretary, who has a son in the 3rd grade Spanish Track. Debbie is responsible for documenting minutes at all the PTO meetings and communicating these to the parent body. (

Thank  you to all of our PTO officers for their willingness to step up and their enthusiasm in doing their jobs at TIS.

Please feel free to contact me or any PTO officer with questions or comments. We are here as a resource for parents and look forward to meeting and working with all of you.

Paula Prince
PTO President 2008/09
