Wacky Science

Class Description: The world viewed through a scientific lens is filled with amazing and mysterious phenomena! During this class students will participate in a hands on science experiment or exploration each week through various open inquiry topics that will introduce them to the exciting world of science. Each class will cover a different scientific topic and include an experiment chosen by the student’s interests. We might create volcanic eruptions, explore the biology of funky fungi, study the composition of clouds, grow and observe bacteria, or have fun with slime! This class is sure to be wacky, wild, and spark students’ interest in the scientific world around them.

Junior Environmental Engineering — Thinking Green: Are you ready to get down and dirty searching for solutions to some of our biggest environmental problems? In this class, students ponder some truly “hot” environmental issues. They will save endangered animals, help plants grow and create projection from the Sun’s heat. By investigating natural process like erosion, animal adaptations, and plant growth, we discover ways that we as engineers can be inspired by the world around us to take on all sorts of challenges.

Class Description: The Abacus may be an “old” tool, but it is still around for a reason — it works! The Abacus gives the learner a simple, visual representation that can be used to make equations more concrete and approachable.
Students who struggle with simple mathematics will have great success with proper Abacus training. Students who love math will flourish and be able to tackle even the most complex problems.
Students also gain organizational skills and an attitude about learning that will help them throughout the rest of their education and into adulthood. Over time, they strengthen their concentration skills and become proficient at doing calculations without even relying on an Abacus or a calculator.

Class Description: Hello and welcome to Wacky World of Coding and Design, in Mandarin!

This course will engage students’ creative and playful characters with cool and popular animations to manipulate with coding line. We will make games such as Flappy Bird, T-rex Runner (AKA no internet game) Pusheen Donut Hunter, and more. There will be a variety of sub tasks and group activities to support learning styles and language development.

Students will build character, develop crucial communication and team building skills, learn about Loops and Variables, Events and Actions, Blocks and Alarms, and actual C++ programming language on top of general graphic design knowledge such as alpha channels and pixels, and math concepts such as graph x/y coordinates and angles.

There will be opportunities to work on games and personal projects at home with fun extracurricular YouTube video tutorials and instructions!

Mandarin language proficiency need only be basic level to engage in the course.

Alumni Middle School Option

Continuing Language Experience for TIS Alumni - Japanese, Spanish

Available to Grades: 6th-8th (TIS ALUMNI ONLY)

Days of the Week Offered: Sunday, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Class Description: Middle school alumni (6th-8th grades) of The International School (TIS) will build upon language and cultural fluency skills obtained during their time at TIS.  The 2-hour class has a social, fun setting; yet provides a structured opportunity to read, write, converse and interact in their track language.* Classes are taught by qualified, native-speaking teachers.  A great option for all TIS alumni, whether they’ve continued with a middle school immersion program or not.

*Continuing Language Experience classes do not teach directly to language fluency tests or competitions.  Class activities may include current event discussions, written reading reflections, guest speakers, etc. Grammar and other practice sheets may be offered for completion at home but will not be required as homework.  This class is not transferable for any middle or high school class credits.

Special instructions and notes to understand prior to enrollment: 

  • This class is for TIS alumni only who are currently in 6th-8th grades. Non-graduate alumni who were enrolled for at least one full academic year and can demonstrate at least a 5th grade level fluency may be eligible if there is registration space; please contact Lisa Olivares at lisao@intlschool.org to inquire.  
  • This class runs on SUNDAY, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  
  • Please note that students must be signed in and out by a parent/guardian or other adult noted on the student’s approved pick up list. 
  • A student expectation agreement needs to be signed by enrolled students and their parent/guardian (as Continuing Language Experience students are not current TIS students).  Student expectation includes agreeing to not using smartphones and other devices during class time unless explicitly allowed by the instructor. Failure to adhere to the expectations may result in dismissal from the class without full tuition reimbursement.

 

Late enrollment/cancellation policy (due to the unique class structure of our Continuing Language Experience classes, this policy takes place of the standard Global Kids cancellation policy):

  • Late enrollment is only allowed within the first 5 weeks (or 5 classes, whichever is greater) from the start date.  Late enrollment is only allowed for qualifying students as noted above, and only if the class is not at maximum capacity (see below).  LATE ENROLLMENT WILL NOT BE ALLOWED PAST THIS TIME. Tuition will be prorated according to start date.
  • Cancellation policy: Students may exit the Continuing Language Experience classes up until the last 3 weeks of the class if agreed upon by family and instructor.  In the case of withdrawal, ONE HALF of the remaining tuition balance is due upon withdrawal if the student has chosen the monthly payment plan. In the case of full advanced payment of tuition already submitted, ONE HALF of tuition prorated to the remaining sessions of class will be refunded.  Any withdrawals made within the last 3 weeks of classes are responsible for paying the full remaining tuition and no refunds will be issued.  All reservation fees are forfeited in all cases of cancellation.
  • Tuition will not be prorated for missed classes unless a class session is cancelled by The International School or the Instructor.  

 

Class Dates: Sunday, January 26, 2020 – Sunday, June 7, 2020** 

**No class 2/16, 3/22, 3/29, 4/12 and 5/24

In the case of inclement weather, a decision will be made by 7:00 a.m. as to whether or not class will be cancelled.  You will be notified via email from the class instructor at that time if class is cancelled.  In the case of a class cancellation, additional class makeup times will be offered in June.
