Alumni Continuing Language Experience

Alumni of The International School who are currently in 6th-8th grades can now build upon language and cultural fluency skills obtained during their time at TIS!

Each Continuing Language Experience class session (Japanese or Spanish) has a social, fun setting; yet provides a structured opportunity to read, write, converse and interact in their track language.*  Classes are taught by qualified, native-speaking teachers, and are a great option for all TIS alumni, whether they’ve continued with a middle school immersion program or not!

For more information and to enroll in the Winter/Spring 2020 session, please contact Lisa Olivares, Alumni Manager, at lisao@intlschool.org.

At this time, we only offer the Continuing Language Experience class for alumni of the Japanese and Spanish tracks.  Mandarin is planned for Fall 2020!

*Continuing Language Experience classes do not teach directly to language fluency tests or competitions.  Class activities may include current event discussions, written reading reflections, guest speakers, etc.  Grammar and other practice sheets may be offered for completion at home but will not be required as homework.  This class is not transferable for any middle or high school class credits.

FAQ:

Can high school alumni enroll?

The content and language level of this class is for TIS alumni who are currently in 6th-8th grades.  (Non-graduate alumni in middle school who were enrolled for at least one full academic year and can demonstrate at least a 5th grade level fluency may be eligible if there is registration space; please contact Lisa Olivares at lisao@intlschool.org to inquire.)

What are days, times and cost of the session?

Each session is one semester long.  Class is once per week on SUNDAY, from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.  The Winter/Spring 2020 semester runs from Sunday, January 26, 2020 – Sunday, June 7, 2020.  No class 2/16, 3/22, 3/29, 4/12 and 5/24.  The cost is $525/semester.

Can my middle school student get themselves to an from class on the Streetcar, Max, bus or similar transit?

Unfortunately not.  We know middle school kids have spread their wings and can get to places on their own, but our policies first and foremost as an elementary school campus can’t accommodate this arrangement.  Students must be signed in and out by a parent/guardian or other adult noted on the student’s approved pick up list.  We do encourage car pooling!

Are phones allowed in class?

In a word: nope.  A student expectation agreement needs to be signed by enrolled students and their parent/guardian (as Continuing Language Experience students are not current TIS students).  Student expectations include agreeing to not using smartphones and other devices during class time unless explicitly allowed by the instructor.  Failure to adhere to the expectations may result in dismissal from the class without full tuition reimbursement.

Is there late enrollment?

Late enrollment is only allowed within the first 5 weeks (or 5 classes, whichever is greater) from the start date.  Late enrollment is only allowed for qualifying students as noted above, and only if the class is not at maximum capacity.  Tuition will be prorated according to start date.  Tuition cannot be prorated for missed classes unless a class session is cancelled by The International School or the Instructor.

Uh oh, it snowed!!!

In the case of inclement weather, a decision will be made by 7:00 a.m. as to whether or not class will be cancelled.  You will be notified via email from the class instructor at that time if class is cancelled.  In the case of a class cancellation, additional class makeup times will be offered.
