April 19, 2015: Music

Hello First Grade Families! Our music room has had a lot of activity lately. Our games have included Lemonade and Four White Horses. Both of these songs require body percussion, partners and singing voices. It is a lot to think about for a seven year old.

A fun spring time activity we do is exploring aleatoric music. In this activity, a story is told about a man who went on a walk. While he was walking he came across a triangle, rectangle and circle. The kids decide that each shape represents an instrumental family. A conductor then leads the group on the "walk" again, only this time the instrumental families play when their appropriate shape appears.

Our most recent challenge is a song in Japanese called Hotaru Koi. This is a great piece that stretches the children's xylophone skills, creative dance and collaboration. Eventually this piece will grow into a performance where some students play instruments and others dance. It is a beautiful piece and the children seem really excited to learn this song. I hope you have a wonderful day!
