We have begun our gymnastics unit with an inquiry into different kinds of balance. A course of graded stepping stones and different levels of balance beams allowed us to observe how our bodies move in and out of balance. We are walking forwards, sideways, and backwards on these courses to compare how difficult it is to balance in these different ways. We are also balancing objects on our bodies.
Next, we will begin shifting our weight from our feet to our hands as we practice donkey kicks, monkey hops, tumbles, and cartwheels. Eventually we will be combining these skills into sequences and designing simple routines.
