For our previous project, third graders worked with the idea of texture in painting. Currently the students are using texture in a ceramics project. I introduced them to the work of artist Julie Elkins; she creates landscapes using clay. The students generated ideas in their sketchbooks of what they wanted their final ceramic landscapes to look like before they began.
The third graders are combining the pinch, coil, and slab ceramic techniques to create their textured landscapes. They are reviewing how important it is to create a solid connection between two pieces of clay, along with the process ceramic artwork goes through before it is completed. All of their clay creations will be fired in the kiln two times, once for the bisque firing, and once for the glaze firing.
