Read in Your PJs Day Next Week!

It’s an English class tradition! On the last days before Winter Break, students at The International School roll out of bed and straight to their classroom – pajamas and all! Our Annual Read In Your Pajamas Day is a student favorite. It’s a celebration of reading for the joy of reading.

1st through 5th Grade students can come to school in their pjs to participate.*  Packing a set of regular clothes is recommended.

Read in Your Pajamas day will be spread across two days as it was last year. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Grade Parents and other caregivers are invited to join us during your child’s English class. Bring a favorite book, wear your pajamas too, and spend some time reading to kids or being read to! Super simple, super wonderful.  4th and 5th Graders have opted to read on their own this year (sorry, parents!)

Dec 19th – Read In Your Pajamas Day for 3rd & 5th Grades (Times and locations for 3rd Grade parents to join us will be confirmed by your child’s English Teacher)

Dec 20th – Read In Your Pajamas Day for 1st, 2nd, and 4th Grades (Times and locations  for 1st and 2nd Grade parents to join us will be confirmed by your child’s English Teacher)

*Is your child in PreK-K? Some classes participate in their homerooms; ask your child’s teacher!

Introducing J May!

We are pleased to introduce J May, our new Global Kids Program Coordinator! Here is a bio written by J:

“Born and raised in the desert of Las Vegas, Nevada and just moved out to the Portland area (back for round II), because I oddly enjoy the seasonal weather. I have attended the University of Oregon (Go Ducks!) and Portland State with a BS in Communications and minor in Child development looming for next fall. I have loads of experience having been an afterschool enrichment teacher and recess coordinator just up the road at Ainsworth Elementary for 4+ years, a seasonal site director at Steve & Kate’s Camp at All Saints School in Northeast PDX for a few summers, and just recently a kids’ programs supervisor at Life Time Athletic in Las Vegas.

I am ecstatic at the opportunity to join the amazing International School family. I aim to provide an entertaining, educational, friendly and safe environment for all. Let’s get started! Go Owls!”

Welcome to TIS, J!

Do you have questions like “Is my child sleeping enough?  Is my child eating enough? Does my child have good sleeping and eating habits?  If you lay awake at night with these types of questions, we have the answers for you!  Please join the Parent Network for our first event in our Educational Series with Dr. Jennifer Kim, Sleep Specialist, and Nutritionist, Megan Barnett.

Dr. Jennifer G. Kim

Jennifer’s interest in sleep medicine began with her first patient, herself. She developed insomnia during college which worsened during medical school. After residency, she started practicing general internal medicine in an under-served community. Her interest in sleep, soon led her back to complete a sleep medicine fellowship. She has been practicing sleep medicine in Oregon since 2009. During her sleep medicine fellowship, she started seeing pediatric patients and saw the importance of addressing sleep issues earlier in life.

She earned her Bachelors of Science from Cornell University and her Doctor of Medicine from Wake Forest University School of Medicine. She is licensed by the Oregon Medical Board and Board Certified in Sleep Medicine and Internal Medicine.

Megan Barnett

Megan Barnett works as a functional nutritionist using her in depth understanding of physiology and nutrition to create biochemically tailored nutrition plans that optimize her clients’ health. Instead of using mainstream dietary advice, comprehensive laboratory testing and health history serve as a guide for building individualized nutrition therapies to support peak health and reverse symptoms of chronic disease.

Megan holds a Bachelor of Science in Dietetics from Kansas State University and a Master’s Degree in Human Nutrition and Functional Medicine from University of Western States in Portland, Oregon. She also holds certificates in mindful eating from University of California, San Diego as well as vinyasa yoga.

Chinese Students to Visit in January!

For the 6th consecutive year, TIS will be hosting students from our Capstone partner school in Suzhou, China. The 30 students and 3 teachers from the Suzhou Experimental Elementary School (SEES), will be visiting January 28-February 2.

This year, families from both 4th and 5th grade Chinese will host students – thank you, host families!! Each visiting student will be matched with a TIS student with whom they will attend classes throughout their visit. Some of the visiting students will be the same students who will host our students during Capstone in March. This is a wonderful opportunity for the 5th graders to get to know their host buddy and to get a glimpse of what it may be like to stay with a host family and attend a host school during Capstone.

To learn more about Capstone or the exchange program with SEES, please contact Meredith (meredithf@intlschool.org)
