ISP Volunteers of the Year

ISP faculty and admins would like to take a moment to recognize our 2019 Volunteers of the Year, Andrea Long and Peggy Kmiec

Andrea is currently the Co-Chair of the Parent Network, is heavily involved with the ISP garden. She has been a key member of the Parent Network Steering Committee since its revival four years ago, and has been key in building it to welcome all types families and volunteer options. Her positive attitude and dedication to the school is clear in everything that she does.

Peggy is dedicated to keeping our campus beautiful, safe, and clean. She leads the Keepin it Clean’ walks, and is often out there on her own, tidying the areas surrounding campus. She is also active in her daughters’ classes and in the library. Peggy is always ready to jump in to new school activities, and shares her enthusiasm for the school’s program, mission, and values to current and prospective families alike.

Whether they are  chaperoning a field trip, handing out cocoa or cookies, or planning parent and student events, Andrea and Peggy never hesitate to lend a hand wherever it is needed. We can’t even begin to adequately share our gratitude for all that they do. THANK YOU!!!

Volunteer Appreciation Day

Speaking of volunteers, it’s ISP Volunteer Appreciation Day! Way to go! Special shout-out to all of our library helpers, room parents, field trip chaperones, keepin’ it clean team, photographers, gardeners, and TOO TOO Many more folks to name here!

This may sound cliche, but it is difficult to express exactly how much we appreciate all the volunteer work that you have done this year.  Volunteers – you have made the ISP community a supportive, fun, loving, enriching place to be. You have made it possible for our children to experience so much, to learn and to grown. You have made many people smile, and you have helped those of us who are lucky enough to call ISP “work” feel supported and energized.

It’s not too late to record your hours for this year!

Faculty Transitions

All schools expect a certain amount of faculty departures during the summer, and this year will be no different.  Most of the reasons for departures this year are common, such as retirement, the desire to take a break from teaching, new spouse employment that requires relocation, a desire to teach older children, new births, and other personal matters. In that respect, the following faculty will not be returning in the Fall:

Teachers

Robert Briglia
Jose Castillo
Yifeng Gao
Peter Musselman
Keiko Peffley
Patty Saldarriaga
Janina Tabilo
David Top
Angela Whitebirch
Lora Worden

Teaching Assistants

Norma Breitenbucher
Yi Guan

As you will see, we have several teachers who have been with us a long time. Peter Musselman joined ISP in 2010, and has decided to move on to a new professional opportunity. Teaching Assistant Yi Guan has been with us since 2007, and will be retiring from teaching, as will Norma Breitenbucher. Coach Robert Briglia, who has spent the last 15 years with ISP, is also retiring from teaching. The impact that each of these teachers have had on our school is immeasurable, and they have been exceptional co-workers. Please join us in congratulating them and wishing them the best in their new journeys.

We wish to recognize all of these departing faculty for their dedication and service to our community as they move on to new phases of their lives. To each of these teachers, we forward our gratitude and thanks for their commitment to the students in their care and their contributions to ISP.

LIBROS for Oregon

International School of Portland has been accepted, as one of six libraries in Oregon, to participate in the LIBROS for Oregon program in 2019.  This means that we will have access to purchase Spanish-language material at the largest Spanish-language book fair in the world, Feria internacional de libro de Guadalajara

Though ISP was not selected to send a delegate to Guadalajara, there will be three librarians who will travel to the fair to purchase books on behalf of all six participating libraries.  This is an amazing opportunity for us to build our Spanish language collection, and further support reading across languages, cultures, genres, and forms!

Happy reading!

Lora Worden, Librarian

 Library Help Needed!

Just as there’s stories for everyone in the library, there’s a task for everyone in the library, too!  Now more than ever, we need volunteers to help us get the library ready for the summer remodel.

We have standing jobs, sitting jobs, small projects, large projects, tech projects, and hands on projects.  You can come any time Monday – Friday 7:304:00!

One very special opportunity we have is to join us for a packing and pizza party in the library on Friday, June 7, from 5:008:00.  Kids can read (their own books), watch a movie, or help with a kid-friendly project while their family helps with other projects in the library.  If you provide the people power, we will provide the pizza.

Please contact Heidi Smith Evans, hevans@intlschool.org, to let us know when you can come in and help!
