News from Alfonso – 5/21

Greetings Friends,

This last month of school is always a whirlwind of activity! The grade 5’s are already doing gown fittings and graduation pictures, and I am sure they are thinking a lot about what life next year will be like out in the big world.

Walk and Bike month continues till the end of May as does your opportunity to fill out the parent survey on line at intlschool.org/survey. The survey is brief. Please give us your feedback.

This Thursday evening will be the Annual General Meeting of the Board at 6:30 in the gym, at which we will hear various reports on the state of the school, honor board members completing their terms, and welcome new members to the board. Please join us and reserve childcare if you need it at intlschool.org/childcare.

I hope you’ll also join me for a fun evening at the Wine Tasting & Spring Social, Saturday June 2. Tickets are on sale at intlschool.org/wine.

On campus, if you have not already done so, please do stop in to see the amazing art show in Stearns Hall.

Last week we had an exciting Friday assembly with a packed house. Professor Meiru Liu of the Confucius Institute at PSU was on hand to help award certificates to the many grade 5 Chinese students who had successfully taken the HSK exam. Mara McGeady reported on a two week sailing journey and her family’s adventures at the White House Easter Egg hunt. And finally, grade 3 students presented a lovely three-act music and movement piece on the development of the City of Portland over time, starting from the days when just trees inhabited the area to the present times of micro chips, mobile phones, big buildings and blaring car horns. Students composed the music and lyrics and worked out the choreography.

Last week also saw the wrap up of state tests for students in grades 3-5, and we will be sharing those results once we have them officially.

Wishing you a peaceful week, and see you on the far side (of Stearns Hall)
