Update from Alfonso – Feb 6

Greetings, friends,

Thanks for giving us a day last Friday to review curriculum and assessment in our school wide mathematics program. Teaching teams were able to refine their individual scope and sequence and then meet once again with the grades above and below to ensure consistency. Our teachers bring together many strong ideas from around the world regarding teaching of math, and through this process we all learn from each other and at the same time remain aware of the best national and international benchmarks.

This Thursday our Chinese dance troupes (and I) will travel to the Oregon State Capitol Building in Salem. The girls will be performing before Governor Kitzhaber and the Chinese Consul General to commemorate not only the year of the dragon but also the 40th anniversary of Nixon’s historic trip to China. It is amazing how far relations between our two countries have come, and amazing to think of the role our students may some day play in furthering relations through their ability to use languages, Spanish and Japanese as well as Chinese.

Please remember to drive carefully and I’ll see you at the corner.

Alfonso
