Greetings,

I hope you can all make it to the auction this coming Saturday night and bid at a level that is meaningful for you. The auction raises critical funds that help make our work possible for each and every child.

PLEASE, please do not park in the designated auction spaces next to the hilltop building and in front of Stearns Hall. These people very kindly and significantly supported our children’s learning by buying these spaces. Help me! And on a related note, if there are construction delays or such, please take a deep breath and DRIVE SLOWLY around campus.

I trust everyone had an illuminating parent teacher conference last Friday. As we adults meet and talk about our students, it is important for us to remember to include the student in the future plans to as great an extent as is possible given the age of the student. If not, we can end up running around in circles while the student stands stationary at the middle. And let’s remember that effort counts for a great deal. Let’s remember to commend genuine effort even when it does not immediately yield the results we would like.

Please do stop in to meet Head Candidate Robert Woods either today or tomorrow and welcome him to TIS from Moshi, Tanzania.

So here we are with the auction this week, Thanksgiving the next, and Winter Festival right around the corner! Have a good week and see you at the corner,

Alfonso
Great! Did you buy your tickets? If no, please purchase your tickets online by midnight on Monday at intlschool.org/auction!

The money we raise from this annual event enables us to purchase books and equipment and to offer teacher training, and means we can keep tuition at a lower level than most Independent Schools in our class! So please support the school with your presence.

Click here to check out the online catalog, which will grow and change for a few more days as we input all the donations. We’re working to find the best spot for each item in the live auction (just 20 items!) or the silent auction (many items!). Last Thursday at the Auction Preview we saw so many amazing art projects and baskets – we had to choose just one from each track to be in the live auction. The live auction will feature the following projects. Drumroll please…

Yi Guan and Sandy’s Chinese Pre-K art project
Exquisite black lacquer-effect three-panel screen decorated with photos of whimsical portraits made by the class using felt, buttons, beads and other objects.

Jossie & Abelid’s Spanish Low-K Art Project
Your kids will be over the moon when you bring this hand-made Puppet Theater home with you from the auction!

Taka’s Japanese 4th/5th Grade Art Project
A fused glass platter featuring Japanese carp and the phrase Ichi Go Ichi E (Once in a lifetime, this moment)

Thank you to everyone who worked on or contributed to a class project or basket!
Thank you to everyone who has donated! At this point we are no longer accepting donations.
Thank you to Reba Akin and Huma Pierce for coordinating both the class projects and the preview!

If there is an item in the live auction that you really want, you can bid by proxy. Email or call Kelsey Cleveland to make arrangements. We can either call you when the item is being auctioned or you can tell us the item and your budget and let us bid on your behalf.

Hello, friends,
As you read this I will probably be on the train back from the PNAIS* Heads /Institutional Leadership Conference in Seattle. And you will be meeting our next wonderful Head Candidate (whom I will have the pleasure of visiting with on Tuesday).

First we have to thank once again Run for the Arts Leaders Joan Francis and Holly Levow as well as the many dedicated volunteers who helped out. Joan has managed RFA for some years now, and will be running it again with Holly next year. According to Joan, the preliminary total is $15,704.79! I love that total, not just because it is ginormous (a new word I learned from students) but because when there are cents involved it indicates people really reached down to contribute and support arts education. THANK YOU all for your contributions. And if you find the donation form under your sofa cushion or in the pocket of your coat, it is not too late to bring it in!

And here we are arriving at the auction, which promises to be a lovely event at the Art Museum this year. Buy tickets, invite friends, chip in and get super nanny to come and watch your kids! And please bring in your donation items. I’ll probably be wearing a reminder signboard this week . . .

Last Thursday at grade 1 and 2 assembly I shared a wonderful story called Sarah’s little Ghosts about guilt feelings when we don’t admit to something bad we have done. While it can be challenging to maintain the attention of over 100 six and seven year olds, it is remarkable to see that in this digital age, they can still be utterly transfixed by a good story! A couple of times I almost lost my place in reading when I noted the beautiful look of wonder on their faces.

And the school council has come up with a great idea for assemblies. They have asked that teachers share their experiences of growing up and going to school in their countries. I am looking forward to hearing these stories myself.

Teachers worked hard on assessment reports last Friday; I hope you had a chance or will have a chance to read my Friday communication about how assessment works. Please be sure to sign up for a teacher conference on 11/11 or 11/15 if you haven’t already (click here to sign up).

And speaking of learning milestones, congratulations to Chinese KG student Ahna who stopped at the corner last week to proudly show me that she had learned to whistle. The longer I work in this profession the more incredible it is to me that we learn not only language and calculus, but also how to speak, walk, eat solid food, and whistle.

See you at the corner,

Every year the parent community at TIS rallies together to throw a wonderful holiday party for our teachers and staff. It’s our way of thanking them for their hard work, dedication, and love for our children. This year’s party will be on Saturday, December 3rd, 7:00-10:00 p.m. at Tom and Karla Nutt’s home in SE Portland.

Since this event is sponsored entirely by the parent community, we are relying on you for help. Here are ways you can contribute:

1. Serve at the party – it is an incredibly fun evening and being a server is the only way a parent can attend the party. (Servers arrive at 6:00 p.m. and help clean up after.)
2. Create a homemade appetizer or dessert for the party – we need only finger foods this year that are easily passed on a serving tray

3. Donate beverages – wine and non-alcoholic beverages are needed
4. Donate cash – this helps us buy items that are not donated

The holiday party is a wonderful evening that the staff and faculty look forward to every year, and is made possible by the generosity of our parent community. Thanks in advance for your support!

If you asked Alfonso what TIS needs most to strengthen student learning, what would he say?
What kind of resources would help students with inquiry-based learning?
How does Alfonso want to help TIS teachers before he leaves?
This year’s special appeal, Alfonso’s Choice, answers these questions by addressing Alfonso’s educational priorities for TIS:

Library and classroom resources: $30,000

Technology: $25,000

Faculty professional development: $20,000

If we surpass our $75,000 goal, extra funds will go toward Alfonso’s choice of the three areas supported by the appeal.

The Details
Library and classroom resources: $30,000
Alfonso has made library and classroom resources a Special Appeal priority for the past three years. This has had an enormous impact on our students. Alfonso and the teachers agree that we still need to build our International Baccalaureate (IB) program by investing in books and classroom resources.

With your help, this year’s Special Appeal will support inquiry-based learning for all students in all four of our languages. Focused on all our IB units of inquiry, the fund will purchase books and bookcases for a classroom-based library system to work together with our main library-based collection.

Alfonso envisions hiring people to write books in our track languages for certain topics where books in the target language don’t exist, are not age appropriate, or are too costly. (For example, it’s hard to find information on the US constitution written in Chinese, Japanese and Spanish for elementary school students.)

We will allocate approximately $25,000 for books and $5,000 for additional classroom resources.

Faculty Professional Development: $20,000

“By funding faculty professional growth, you can enhance the quality of your school more and with fewer dollars than by directing
comparable amounts of money to any other point in your budget of expenses.”
– Independent School Management Magazine

Alfonso prides himself on prudent financial management and making the most impact for students with every dollar spent. As stated by Independent School Management Magazine, faculty professional development is one of the best investments a school can make. There is a virtually unlimited supply of professional development opportunities that will not only help students, but will also increase teachers’ personal growth and job satisfaction.

By raising your paddle on November 19, you will fund professional development related to the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme, teaching literacy skills, and developing rubrics to help students understand teacher expectations.

Consider:

An IB Primary Years Programme workshop for 27 teachers, March 2-4 right here in Portland ($725 per person).

When workshops are given in other cities, a few teachers could attend and become our resident experts training other teachers on that topic. ($1,500-$2,000 per person)

Professional Development Day in-house training for all staff on topics such as assessment strategies and tools ($1,500 per day)

Technology: $25,000
Thanks to your support and Alfonso’s leadership, the school has made great technological strides in the past few years. Now we must
continue the journey, investing more for technology-based support of inquiry-based teaching and learning. Alfonso envisions:

iPad listening stations for students to improve listening and comprehension skills and gain exposure to native speakers other than their teacher by listening to books, poems, music, plays and more.

iPad applications that help students learn to write characters or letters with their fingers. The iPad provides immediate visual feedback that helps students self-correct. (20 iPads: $10,000)

A permanent, reliable projection system caged into the gym ceiling to support assemblies, student presentations, guest speakers, parent meetings, and teacher professional development.

Support and training for teachers to integrate technology into their lesson plans and communications.

Improved connectivity infrastructure so that MacBooks and teacher computers connect to the internet without fail and frustration.

How to support the Special Appeal?
If you want to support the appeal and will be at the auction, raise your paddle proudly during the appeal.

If you cannot attend the auction, here is how:

You may write a check to the International School and indicate Special Appeal in the note and send it to school attention “Development Office” or deliver to any of the receptionists.

To donate securely on-line, you may also click on this Donate Now button (it’s also on every TIS webpage); at program designation, select special appeal.

If you have questions about the special appeal, please contact Kelsey Cleveland, KCleveland@intlschool.org, 503-265-8635

Thank you!!

And welcome to a new Monday and a new week.

Last week ended with the flourish of our annual fall costume parade. It was exciting to see so many princesses, ninjas (and yes a mutant ninja turtle here and there), Star Wars friends, Egyptian princesses, and even Sesame Street characters.

Please see the announcements about auction donations and tickets below and in the weeks ahead. As you know the auction is our largest fundraiser every year, and in addition to supporting operating costs, the money raised also supports purchase of resources, books, technology, and professional development for teachers and other staff.

You will also see below that Head candidate Glenn Chapin will be visiting tomorrow and Wednesday. PLease do make every effort to meet him on one of the occasions listed below. You can find his and the other candidates’ resumes at intlschool.org/newhead (use the All-Parent Password).

And can it be? It is already time for assessment report writing this Friday so there will be no school for students.

I will shortly be sharing with you an email about assessment and reporting, so I will cut short here and wish you a very positive and dry week. And Happy Halloween.

See you at the corner
Alfonso

For more information, click here to download more information on the Special Appeal.

Donate in person at the live auction or click here to donate now. Your on-line donation will count toward the total raised!

Now you will be able to look at the flyer and order on-line (or turn in a paper order form with a check to any receptionist). The Scholastic order button is at bottom of every TIS web page (intlschool.org) – it looks like this:

Points earned with this program are very important to the school. Points are used to purchase quality books, equipment, digital media, professional development materials and supplies. Please take a moment to sift through the many Scholastic offerings in each catalog and you will find some fun reads, good literature and good deals. I post recommendations on the library web page each month (under “For Parents”). Orders placed in November should arrive in time for the December holidays!

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Last Thursday at grade 1 and 2 assembly and again on Friday at grade 3-5 assembly, the 3rd graders treated us to a lovely presentation on symbols in flags and in national anthems of the United States, Cuba, Mexico, Japan, Taiwan and China. I was pleasantly surprised at how many of our students were able to sing our own national anthem (though the words were projected up on a screen). I was also intrigued by the fact that even many first graders picked up on the preponderance in national anthems of blood and canons and fighting, almost always in the cause of liberty. When we do have a global anthem some day, maybe pre- kindergarteners can write it:

We always share our co oo oo kies
We wash behind our ears
We don’t play tag too roughly
We build nice things with legos

This coming Friday we will have our fall costume festival parade in Stearns hall . You will be able to tune into this delightful event via live streaming at www.ustream.tv/channel/intlschool (use the All-Parent password). A caution that all grades PreK – 5 will be together. We older kids should try to make our costumes not too gruesome for the little ones. Also, no swords, guns, cave man clubs or ketchup encrusted knives please.

Our first wonderful Head Candidate Mr Don Fitzmahan is here visiting today and tomorrow. Tonight, you can attend the Candidate Presentation and Q and A. We have moved it down to Stearns hall to make it easier. And please rsvp for childcare if you need it. You can also say hello to Don tomorrow morning from 7:45 to 8:20 in the staff break room (corner of modular 3 below the garden) . Or you can meet Don tomorrow afternoon from 2:00 to 2:45 in the gym. It is critical that we have widespread participation in the Head Search process. And we need to welcome these four terrific candidates.

Okay take care and see you at the corner,
Alfonso

Last week, I had the great pleasure of speaking on a panel at an event hosted by Capital Pacific Bank. I was joined on the panel by Pam Dreisin, Head of School at the French American International School, and Meade Thayer, Executive Director of the Pacific Northwest Association of Independent Schools (PNAIS). The topic was Board Governance, and our audience included dozens of school board trustees, heads of school, and other administrative staff, as well as representatives from other non-profit organizations.

As thrilled as I was to be invited onto this panel and to have participated in what was a wonderful event, the idea I most took away from the evening was what this moment signified for The International School. As TIS Trustee and alumni parent Sean Onitsuka remarked, my participation on the panel showcased how far TIS has come and how much we have to be proud of. During the panel discussion, Meade Thayer listed the many qualities of successful, professional boards–a revised by-laws, a recent strategic plan, sound recruitment and retention procedures, Board-approved policies for a variety of important issues, and a strong relationship with the head of school. As Meade talked, Sean, Trustee Bill Seidl (who also attended), and I exchanged knowing nods of approval because our Board has every one of these qualities, most of which we owe to past President Michelle Kerin and the work accomplished by Trustees on the Board during her terms.

There was much I learned from this event as well, areas in which the Board can strive to strengthen its governance and oversight of The International School. For one, strong Boards have sound self-evaluation procedures, whereby Trustees can evaluate the Chair, the work of the Board as a whole, and even themselves as individual trustees. We engaged in some form of evaluation last May, but we can do better to make this a more meaningful part of our year. Second, although I am proud of the efforts we have made with regards to professional development and orientation for Trustees, there is more we can do to educate and inform Trustees, both veteran and new. Third, we can do more when it comes to better establishing and then communicating to the community the Board’s goals and objectives for each year. Engaged parents and trustees should be able to identify without hesitation the Board’s yearly goals, and although I can rattle them off without hesitation, it is more important that all of you can.

Our chief goals for this year, by the way, are to hire our next outstanding Head of School and ensure an effective leadership transition; to complete the Campus Master Plan project, thereby finalizing a plan for a campus and facilities that will help us achieve our strategic objectives; and to enhance our financial oversight and development strategies in preparation of future campus construction. In addition to these are numerous other goals set for each of our Standing Committees. I will write more about these goals in future articles.

A frequent comment at the Governance event was how much of the work of school boards goes on behind the scenes and how parents often do not fully understand the role and responsibilities of Trustees. School boards deal with projects and issues that don’t always result in something concrete and readily visible to the community: long term strategic planning, policies, and financial oversight. When boards erect a new building or hire a (or fire!) a Head of School, parents notice. But I’m sure none of you noticed how last year the Board strengthened financial procedures giving the Head of School enhanced flexibility when it comes to important expenditures. Again, much of what boards do is almost invisible.

Boards don’t decide where schools buy pizza for Pizza Monday, whether milk or juice should be served in classrooms, where the school should place ads for prospective parents, or even whether such and such teacher should be let go. Most of the decision-making you encounter as parents are administrative decisions left to the Head of School, working with his or her admin team. Although many issues require some level of consultation between the HOS and the Board, day-to-day and other short term policy decisions are entirely the Head of School’s to make. The Board decides to add Klingon to our language tracks and ensures the school’s facility and financial capacity to do so; the HOS hires the teachers and establishes the curriculum.

More information about the Board can be found at http://intlschool.org/parent/board/. Not only will you find our smiling faces, but there are links to Board minutes, communications, and important documents, such as the TIS Strategic Plan. And as always, the Trustees and I welcome your questions.

A Chinese book club specifically designed for K-5 students is offered by Nan Hai Books in Millbrae, Ca., similar to Scholastic’s monthly book club program. The books are priced right, educational, and your purchases will help the school put more Chinese books in the classrooms and school library. Chinese Track teachers will be distributing the fall flyers to families in their classrooms this week. Last year the school earned nearly $200 in Chinese books from the sales generated from the Spring flyer.

If you would like to order books, please fill out the form included in the flyer and return it to any of our wonderful receptionists with a check payable to Nan Hai for the exact amount by the deadline. It will take about four weeks to receive your order. Let me know if you have any questions.

Greetings Friends,
In today’s top story, Sheridan will be open today with traffic working in both directions on Moody! The only other closure of Sheridan should be on the weekend of Oct 22 and 23. If there are others for a day or so they will let us know but congrats to Stacey and Whitbeck for pushing the job forward on our behalf.

We also met last week with Dee Ann Sandberg of the light rail project and the Stacey and Whitbeck team. For those of you who just joined us this year, let me try to summarize what it is about. The new Light rail will come from the East side, across a new bridge, to the waterfront (down closer to OHSU) and then north and cut up to run alongside Harbor Drive. Then it will go straight along the other side of Harbor Drive almost to just across from the streetcar stop and will then go up high and cut over Harbor up to Naito and then up Lincoln Street. It will cut through to Lincoln with the removal of the radio station which now stands across Naito. It will stop on Lincoln and 3rd and thus enable TIS families to commute from the East Side rather easily.

On November 1st they will begin using the stretch of ground up along Naito as a construction staging area for their trucks and equipment. They will create a gravel road whose entrance is behind the Hilltop Building and which will run down along Naito to the North where the staging area proper will be. Much further down along Naito almost to the area above the streetcar stop they will be drilling (and thankfully not pile driving) for the overpass that will bring the new light rail up and across Naito. At no point will the new light rail becoming very close to our campus, but it will come close enough to assist commuting.

The construction folks have been very focused on our needs and well being and they are aware of nap times, the necessity to keep dust down and so on. Resilient as we are and as open as they are to communication and concerns, we think this will work out fine. If you would like to see some renderings of how it will look around us when the project is completed click here to see them on our website.

Last Friday afternoon, a parent of a low K student slipped on the road. A group of parents stepped right in, called 911 and summoned me for help. The mom turned out to be fine. I appreciate that community spirit from those who helped out.

As you will see below we have four wonderful candidates for the Head of School post coming to visit in the next few weeks. Please do welcome them and try to stop in for one of the open discussions or meet and greets.

Finally, as most of you know, the people who founded TIS 22 years ago are Douglas and Frey Stearns. I am sorry to report that Frey’s mother, Mrs. Frances Novy Diack has passed on at the age of 103. Mrs Diack was a long standing supporter of this school and she will be missed.

As you look around for the sun today remember Bob Dylan’s words “The sun’s not yellow; it’s chicken.”

Have a peaceful week
Alfonso
